Sermon Notes:
Jesus compares and contrasts things that do not go together:
Fasting & a wedding
New cloth on old clothing
New wine in an old wineskin
He is making the point that fasting right now would not go with him being present in the flesh.
“The purpose of fasting is to heighten awareness of God’s presence so one can pray and be more sensitive to his voice.” -Michael Card
There is also comparing and contrasting in the story right before this (Mark 2:15-17)
Do these things go together?
Pharisees (separtists) & “sinners” (outcasts)? “No”
Jesus & sinners? “Yes”
In Mark 2:17 Jesus explains how and why he goes with sinners.
There is also the following comparison throughout Mark including this passage (2:13-15):
The crowd & disciples (followers of Jesus)
“The crowd comes and goes, but a disciple follows Jesus as a permanent way of life. What accounts for the difference? The call of Christ.” -Jason Meyer
Will we respond to the call of Jesus to follow him as his disciple?
